I heard someone call my name. I looked over my shoulder to see who it was. It was Matt. Then suddenly, I banged right into someone. It felt like I walked into a brick wall. Books, papers, file folders and a brief case went flying through the air.
“Oh, I’m so sorry,” I bent down to help the man pick up his things.
“It was my fault,” he bent down too and…
“Ouch!” I touched my forehead. I saw stars for a few seconds. Then I started laughing.
“Are you okay?” he looked concerned. “I’m so sorry. I wasn’t looking where I was going,” Then he laughed too and rubbed his head. “Today is just not my day,”
“I wasn’t watching where I was going either,” I looked into his brown eyes and smiled. “Are you a teacher here?” I picked up his books and handed them to him, and then stood up.
“Actually, I teach next door…at the high school,” he took the books from me and picked up his brief case. “Thank you,” he smiled. The man who was with him was still picking up the file folders, and Matt, April and Violet chased after the papers that were flying around in the hallway. Every time someone opened the front door, the papers would fly all over the place.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” he asked me again. “I’m Victor Collins,” he stuck out his hand and smiled.
I stretched out my hand and shook his, “Nice to meet you Mr. Collins.”
He raised one eyebrow, “From the look on your face, I’m guessing that you’ve meet my nephew Zach,” his smile spread across his face, making the dimple in his chin more pronounced. “He’s a little difficult at times, but deep down he’s a good boy.”
I frowned, “Actually, he’s not very nice at all,” I quickly covered my mouth. Did I really say that…out loud? Oh, no!
Victor Collins laughed. “You never told me your name,” he said still smiling. “I don’t think that’s fair, do you?”
“I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. It wasn’t very nice, it just slipped out,” I looked at him and then looked at my shoes.
“That’s okay. I don’t even remember what you said. So, are you going to tell me your name?”
“I’m Lacy Quinn,” I looked up at him. He was wearing a plaid jacket, a light blue button down shirt and jeans. His smile quickly faded for some reason, and he looked a little surprised. There was a few seconds of awkwardness, but then his smile returned.
“Nice to meet you Lacy Quinn,”
