Character Development: Zodiac Traits – Pisces

Pisces with text

This is the second part of my new blog series on…

Character Development using Zodiac Traits.

It’s my favorite writing tool…to create living, breathing characters that jump off the page. After giving my characters a name and finding images of what my characters look like (not necessarily in that order all the time.) I give them a birthday.

Then I start searching for Zodiac Traits.

Pinterest is a great place to get information on Zodiac Traits. Check out my board…

Pisces negative keywords with text

I start with negative and positive keywords for each Zodiac sign.

These negative keywords are very helpful for character development. Especially for developing your antagonist or a character that’s not so nice. You can use several of these negative keywords, sprinkled with a few positive keywords to create a living, breathing antagonist. People are complex, no one is all bad or all good. Creating an antagonist that has some good qualities makes them scarier…in my opinion.

Characters need layers, depth…that’s what makes them real.

Pisces positive keywords with text

These positive keywords are very helpful in developing your protagonist, side kicks and mentors, sprinkled with a few negative keywords and you have a living, breathing character with flaws. Someone people can relate to.

Then I dig deeper with this book  “The Power of Birthdays, Stars & Numbers – The Complete Personology Reference Guide by Saffi Crawford and Geraldine Sullivan.”

I love this book!

It has information, on every single birthday.

2015…A Year of Change

beachduskjpg

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while.

I can’t believe it’s almost 2016! Where did this year go? There’s been so many changes in my life this year, so many things to do, so many things going on. It just flew by in a blink of an eye. We left Florida in August, I had dreamed of moving for so many years…it didn’t really seem real when we did leave.

dirt roadduskjpg

We left our house on 5 acres near the state forest and headed west.

I have to say…I do not miss that dirt road…at all!!!

We had a long way to go and thankfully we got here safely!

We didn’t go by train, we drove…I just like this photo.

We arrived in Arizona…our new home on August 7th.

Inspiration Board #6 – part seven

chapter six part 7 with textjpg

For a split second, I thought I saw something in the window on the second floor. Suddenly a gust of wind blew my hair in my face, and I couldn’t see. I pulled my hair away from my eyes, and that’s when I saw it. I froze. I couldn’t move. I was afraid, but yet I was fascinated. I took a couple of steps closer, so I could get a better look. It looked like a girl standing in the window, but not a real one. It was a misty white cloud in the shape of a girl. I stared at the window, then suddenly the misty white girl looked real, and she was staring right at me. I gasped. I couldn’t look away, I don’t know why. I just kept staring at her, and she kept staring at me. Then she put her index finger to her mouth, like she didn’t want me to tell anyone. I shivered. The hair on the back of my neck was standing up, and I could feel goose bumps all over my body.

“This can’t be real. It can’t be!”

Inspiration Board #6 – part five

chapter six part 5 with textjpg

Images, make my story come to life!

They inspire me, they help me see my characters, where they go, what kind of trouble they get into, and sets the mood of the story. That’s why most of the images are dark and moody…with a little touch of color here and there. Just like my story!

Images are such a useful tool for me, especially since I’m an artist/designer/potter/photographer and writer. They help me design my story world. I can visualize my story in my mind, but seeing images related to my story takes it a step further!

That’s why I make these inspiration boards.

If I were you…

I glanced at Joey, his jaw was twitching and his nostrils flared. Then I looked back at the three boys, who were crossing the street.

“Great,” complained Matt. “What do we do now?” Matt looked a little worried, but Joey didn’t look worried at all, he just looked mad.

“Well…Well…Well…boys, look who we have here,” smirked the boy in the middle. “I thought I smelled something foul!”

“Shut up Zach!” Joey’s jaw twitched again.

“What’s wrong?” Zach walked a little closer. “Having second thoughts?” a nasty grin started spreading across his face. He’d be kind of cute, if he didn’t look so mean.

“I knew they would back out, I knew they wouldn’t do it,” said the boy with red hair.

“What’s the matter Joey, you chicken?” the tall boy flapped his arms like a chicken, while the other two laughed. I decided right then and there, that I didn’t like them…at all!

“Shut up you moron!” yelled Matt. I glanced at Matt and saw his face turning red, and then I looked at Zach, who looked even meaner than before.

“What did you say?” asked Zach angrily.

“You heard him,” Joey balled up his hands.

“I’d be careful if I were you,” threatened Zach. I looked around…from one boy to the next, it looked like there was going to be a fight, a real fight.

“Why don’t you leave them alone?” I snapped. Oh crap! Did I just say that…out loud. I bit my bottom lip. Why do I always open my big fat mouth, at the wrong time? It always gets me in trouble.

“Who’s going to make me?” Zach sneered. “You!” then the three of them laughed, so I gave them a dirty look. “You guys are mean,” I narrowed my eyes.

“If I were you…I’d keep my mouth shut and mind my own business,” Zach gave me an icy stare.

“Who’s gonna make me?” I wrinkled my eyebrows and clenched my teeth.
