I took a deep breath before opening the door to the book store. The little bell rang, announcing my entrance. My grandmother looked up from behind the counter, and smiled at me. I smiled back.
“Hi gram,” I ran up to her and gave her a kiss and a big hug. She gives the best hugs in the world. I closed my eyes and hugged her harder. The smell of her perfume made me feel better. She pulled away from me and looked into my eyes.
“How was your first day?” she looked a little worried.
“It was fine,” I bit my lip and looked away.
She looked me over and that’s when she saw my knees. “What happened?” she raised her eyebrow.
“It’s nothing. I just fell,” I looked into her light blue eyes and smiled. But, I knew that wasn’t going to work.
“Nora!” my grandmother looked over her shoulder. Then my mother came out from the back room.

Phoebe sounds like a tough – but lovely – grandmother.

Yeah, I like complex characters. She’s mostly sweet, but there’s another side to her. Thanks for stopping by Debs! 🙂
